My first two locations are duds. They are horrible. I have one killer location — it's a manufacturing plant, and we're on track for eight grand this month.
Background
Manuel is a detective sergeant in the DC metro area, a 22-year law enforcement veteran who spent five years as a homicide detective. His wife is a school teacher and their son is 11. Despite being high earners, taxes were straining their finances and they were living paycheck to paycheck, which sent Manuel down what he calls "the YouTube rabbit hole" for nearly two years.
My wife and I were considered high earners, and taxes was crushing us. We have to figure out a way how to not only stop living paycheck to paycheck — we need to figure out a way of how to get some other type of income that will be a tax advantage to us as a family.
The Challenge
Manuel had chased other side businesses before, including juicing and woodworking, but they were time-consuming and didn't produce meaningful income alongside his demanding W2 job. He'd also set his sights on a FedEx line-haul route, but the capital requirement was too high. Once he started vending, impatience got the better of him early on.
My first two locations are duds. They are horrible, and I can't wait till that year is up on those contracts so I can move those machines.
The Turning Point
Manuel came across Mike through a YouTube interview by creators he already followed and was drawn in immediately. He committed to showing up in the Vendingpreneurs community every day.
I came across Mike on YouTube — a few guys that I follow actually interviewed him, and I was intrigued after just seeing his interview. I was in.
Where They Are Now
About a year and a half in, Manuel runs 10 locations with an 11th on order, all while still working full-time as a detective sergeant. His best location, a manufacturing plant he restocks every two days, is on track for $8,000 in a single month, pushing his total revenue to roughly $10,500 to $11,000 a month. He plans to retire from law enforcement in three years and run vending full-time.
I did not envision having this much success this fast.
